Visual Appetizers

Food & Film.
Two very different passions.
When put together, you get a lip-smacking visual delight of all the senses
except taste & and texture.

Nevertheless, two culinary films I look forward to...

Dead Hare

shot from Joseph Beuy's
November 26, 1965

This was the beginnings of the “ME” generations or what is in my mind the most vacuous self-absorbed uncritical group of morons that have walked the earth. And every generation suffers this shit, only now they are a huge marketable force to make money off of their massive insecurities. Since all the variations of the picture plane have worked themselves out in western culture the only thing that is left is marketing. That’s what the “kids” are obsessed with, the adults too. Real experience, real taking the time to find out for ones self? Gone. The number of times I’ve had dealers say over the last 20 years, wow you’re a real artist or painter but your work is too difficult (hence unmarketable) or you need to be in some group shows curated by whatever hip momentary taste maker… well if I had a dollar.

In short the Institutional Critique Model allows curators the illusion that they are allowing the marginalized into the machine and the current four letter words of quality or experience or Art with a capital A isn't in their vocabulary. Why? Because they are too blind to see it and when Art manages to make it into the machine, they still don’t really get it. Like I said most artists don’t either. The Institutional Critique allows them to feel like they are being open and democratic and feel good without having to do any real work and at the end of the day, who in this world has time to work when one is twittering about the most recent consistency and color of the shit they just took.

Bowerbirds

To woo a mate, male bowerbirds decorate, lavishly.
One twig at a time, the satin bowerbird constructs an arbor. His goal: lure a female into the sanctuary and impress her enough with his display so she'll mate with him.

Like all bowers, a great bowerbird's twiggy avenue is used only for courtship and not as a nest. The outer pile of stones is the stage for his theatrics once an admirer is lured within.

Though males seem to do all the right things, females sometimes simply fly away.

as Attenborough puts it...

Poor People Pretty Much Fucked

The CSER study identified four major poverty groups within the U.S. The first two groups—one composed of disenfranchised blue-collar workers, the other made up of members of poor rural populations—have been adversely affected by the nation’s gradual shift to a technology-based, global economy. Researchers have dubbed disenfranchised blue-collar workers the Factory Fucked, while members of poor rural populations are called the Farm Fucked. Park characterized the individuals in these two groups as “fucked from the get-go.”

The other two rapidly expanding groups of poor fucks are the suburban poor, whose members can’t afford the rising cost of such basic necessities as healthcare, and the urban underclass, whose members are found in the nation’s troubled inner cities. Researchers termed these groups the Recently Fucked and the Utterly Fucked, respectively.”

Pollan's Pointers

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Don’t eat anything your great-great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.

Especially avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable c) more than five in number — or that contain high-fructose corn syrup.

Get out of the supermarket whenever possible. You won’t find any high-fructose corn syrup at the farmer’s market; you also won’t find food harvested long ago and far away.

Pay more, eat less.

People who eat according to the rules of a traditional food culture are generally healthier than we are.
(Eat more like the French. Or the Japanese. Or the Italians. Or the Greeks.)

Cook. And if you can, plant a garden.

(more details here)

& other sayin's -

Don't eat egg salad from a vending machine

You don't get fat on food you pray over.

Breakfast, you eat alone. Lunch, you should share with a friend. Dinner, give to your enemy.

Don't eat anything that took more energy to ship than to grow.

Never eat anything that is pretending to be something else.
(fake butter/meat/*** - flavored)

Don't yuck someone's yum.
(another words - keep your food criticism to yourself whilst I'm eating, bitch!)

Avoid snack foods with the "OH" sound in their names:
DORITOS, FRITOS, CHEETOS, TOSTITOS etc.

It's better to pay the grocer than the doctor.

Be present to your food. Focus on what's in front of you.

The Books

"This will take a little bit of explaining. I built this prototype of the Spoonbox out of wood, plexiglass, zinc plates, measuring spoons, and closeout radioshack parts. It hooks up to a CD player and small amplifier which cause the spoons to dance. There are small speakers behind the spoons that move in response to the sounds on the CD which I carefully composed using low frequency sine waves and kitchen sounds. The speakers, in turn, blow small puffs of air into the spoons which cause them to bounce/vibrate in rhythmic patterns. It really must be seen to be understood, but this video might give you some sense of what it does."
