House K

interweaving the indoor and the outdoor

Japanese Food Porn Pt. 1

Going to Japan was a mind blowing culinary experience for me.
The spectrum of ingredients to the way it's been cooked,
all executed in the upmost respect -
(sushi is a special case).

One can't help but get overboard in obsessing over almost every dish!

marinated raw horse meat with yolk on top

Shin Family

The area is known for their sulphur baths - the whole
town smells like rotten eggs but you get used to it...
We stayed at a traditional onsen (bath house)/hotel,
where they accommodated us like royalties!

an assortments of gorgeous nibbles - part of a 15 course meal.
a range of textures from the crunchy crab to the slurrpy seaweed...

tempura crab patty

another part of a 15 course meal

We endulged in the following 4 dishes at around 8 in the morning.

Hokkaido hairy crabs.
The poor sucker (we picked) was thrown into a pot of boiling water right before us...
But no hard feelings.

Uni (sea urchin roe)
One of my favorite seafood delicacies, only eaten in rare occasions -
it's a burst of the flavor of sea in your mouth.

Sashimi Galore
(on rice)

Ikura (salmon roe) and Uni
I could eat the gooey orangey goodness on rice on any given day...

Fresh lamb meat for barbeque - aka jingisukan
named after Genghis Khan: perfect with a litre-pint-o-beer!
Sapporo beer museum, Sapporo Island

deep fried crab - croquet style

-Crab sashimi?
-Yes, please

An assortment of the freshest sushi you can get in Tokyo.
(had to wake up at 5am for this!)

Flash frozen tunas due for inspection, then auctioned off for 1000 - 1000000s of $ !

LIVE AND DIE IN BACON FAT

Holy Shit.

I need to get my hands on one of these or I could attempt to create it...

(fuck it, i'll just buy it when I'm back...)

Amen, Ramen.

An Ode to Ramen...
By Darius Namdar

Its cold outside and rainy,
And all I can think of is food,
I need something warm and hearty,
So I dream up a bowl of you.

Everything stops around me,
Its like my life's complete,
Life is as it should be,
And so I begin to eat.

The choir starts and the angels sing,
My soul is now at rest,
I've found what i've been looking for,
I feel like i've been blessed.

O Ramen, O Ramen, O Ramen
You make me feel so whole,
A little tear of joy & sadness,
Drops to the bottom of the bowl.

I wipe my tears and and pay the bill,
I've been here for some time,
I leave my seat to walk outside,
And the sun begins to shine.

porky, porky goodness...
(the Tonkotsu has much more depth than the miso, I reckon)

Additional seasonings include black pepper, butter, chili pepper,
chili paste, sesame seeds and crushed garlic.

eating ramen is a very, very private affair...
(above eaten in a small cubicle
a personal favorite of my brother and I)

emulisified deliciousness floats atop the broth..
Supposedly this ramen is the best in the whole of Japan rated in
most ramen blogs! Wasn't my personal though...
10 people were waiting outside on small rocks.
A rather strange sight.

Chiasu ramen from Sapporo Island

THE BEST miso ramen in Tokyo (Ginza)... so says the chef.
