The Triumph Of Greed

Tax evasion, tax avoidance, money laundering: institutionalised crime is so much part of the global economy. Then there is moral crime...

The (failed) reconstruction of Iraq, with almost no new infrastructure or working institutions to show for it, will be recorded as probably the largest site of embezzlement in history.

To slip towards crime, therefore, is to slip into an economic model in which wealth is no longer created in any real sense but only extracted from what already exists.

(An interesting article by Clive Dilnot - read here.)

meet bruce

On some of the things, this designer-genius Bruce Mau, comes up with:

Among the various curiosities on display: a car that could be powered by human pedalling; the LifeStraw water filter, a small device that can be used, like a straw, to sip from polluted waters and drink cleanH2O; an old fuel engine rebuilt as a means of converting biomass into energy; self-healing plastic (whose cracks mend themselves); the low-cost laptop taken up by the One Laptop per Child initiative; the iBOT (Dean Kamen's "walking wheelchair"); the "bicycle ambulance" designed to bring emergency medical services to areas in sub-Saharan Africa not served by automobile; a regenerated nose, stored in a clear refrigerated case; and a replica of a featherless chicken, biodesigned for warmer climates...

We are moving toward global clarity - to people finally being to say, 'Oh, I get it. Now I see what's going on in the world.'" And what happens when everyone sees and understands and recognises the need for change? If you ask Mau, what happens next is - of course - design.

(as cheesy as this may sound) he wants to change the world...

FOR THE LOVE OF PIE

A whole summer spent finding the perfect pie crust?!

The hardwork that's put into Hoosier Mama, a pie shop in Chicago, is incredible...

(the actual pies only come in at 14 min into it)

works in progress II

Been working on these the past week -
I definitely wish I had more time on the portraits,
as tomorrow's the deadline/crit.

But I guess I'll work on them when I get back in June...

Awesome, yet eerie photographs by Brian Ulrich.

Mack the Knife

Originally, a German song from an opera in 1928,
based on an anti-hero, who commits murder, rape, robberie and arson.

Over time, many artists have covered it in brilliant ways,
as the music and lyrics have evolved over time.

The Original German version (1928)
(Die Moritat von Mackie Messer):

Louis Armstrong (1956)
(one of my favorites)

Bobby Darin (1959)

Ella Fitzgerald (1960)

The Doors (1968)

Nick Cave (1995)

So how can Mack the Knife be portrayed visually?
My brain itches with curiousity...

Mark Jenkins' humorous yet innovative public installations:

demystifying the bicycle

I love my bike for its simplicity and more importantly, its function.

It gets me from place A to B much quicker than walking.

En Plus,
I DO love the summer wind breezing through my hair/going down Williamsburg Bridge
exploring the beautiful spots the city has to offer/watching the city flash past you like a film
night-cycling when there's less traffic and moreorless quiet/thinking about the day
etc.
(whilst hazardously listening to music under the influence of sorts)

Bikes are fun and safe (if you're not a jackass about it)
and it's really for everyone.

This is my baby, which I'm lending to my dear friend, Dar,
which is resting by the Hudson River Park.

I will be in Paris for Spring of '10 -
hopefully, I'll find a temporary baby to ride...

Meanwhile, check this.

I LOVE STEAK. DO YOU?
